Greetings DOH AOC, Congratulations. You are part of a first ever multiple country Diaspora of Hope with BuildaBridge's Artists on Call. This is taking some added coordination and we appreciate your patience as we work with three partner sites where communication is sometimes difficult--even in our digital age. Please check the blog regularly for updates.
This blog entry will present some basic information for each of you as you begin preparing in earnest to bring hope and healing to children in Kenya, Haiti and Guatemala.
1. By now you should have your ticket. If you have not made your reservations please do so immediately. Prices will begin going up this wee.
2. Immunizations and your health. Immunizations are not required, but highly advised. For a number of years I lived on the coast of Kenya where malaria was quite active. I did not take the medicine, primarily because it made me ill. Unfortunately, I got malaria 3 times. I now take the medicine. The shots are expensive, but worth it. You best bet against illness still remains healthy living in the field. Only drink boiled water (or warm sodas--get used to them), do not eat salads--the vegetables are often grown in "night soil", constantly keep your hands washed--do not scratch your face after shaking hands, wear closed toe shoes.
3. Safety from danger. BuildaBridge is committed to work with kids in the tough places of the world. These will not be pretty, scenic, clean or safe environments. We will be working in slums with kids that do not have the opportunity to bathe regularly, eat well, see a dentist or doctor, and who have suffered from very traumatic events. They will not have access to books, let alone art supplies. Bad things happen in these slums--usually at night. We want you to be safe from harm, we are working with local agencies that will be working to keep you safe. In all places you will be staying in safe places at night. There are some basic rules. 1. Know that there are risks. 2. Never be alone--we ask you to ALWAYS let your leader know where you are--this includes letting your leader know if you are just going to the bathroom or toilet. 3. Stay with the group and do not go wandering about without permission--never in the slum.
